Where to stay in Istanbul
The old city, Beyoğlu and the Bosphorus shore sit on the European side, and Kadıköy faces them from Asia. With a rental car, choose the district by where the car will sleep and how often it will cross the water.

How the districts differ
Sultanahmet is the old city of Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Hippodrome, and it suits a first visit spent at the monuments on foot. Across the Galata Bridge, Karaköy has a ferry pier, and the lanes of Galata climb from it to Galata Tower. A short stay between the old city and Beyoğlu works from there.
Taksim Square, with the Taksim Mosque, is in Beyoğlu. Cihangir, the residential slope below it towards the Bosphorus, has grocers and cafés on its streets and suits a week or a month. Beşiktaş and Ortaköy follow the European shore of the Bosphorus, with a ferry pier at Beşiktaş and the Ortaköy Mosque on the water.
Nişantaşı is a residential part of Şişli, with shops on Abdi İpekçi Avenue. Kadıköy and Moda face the old city from the Asian side and suit a month. From there Sabiha Gökçen is the nearer airport: its operator gives 40 km to Kadıköy, against about 50 km by road to Istanbul Airport.
Staying with a rental car
İSPARK, the car park company of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, publishes the tariff of each of its car parks. At the car parks near the areas in this guide, the first hour costs 140 to 220 TL and a full day 450 to 600 TL, as checked in September 2026.
In Sultanahmet, the Deniz Feneri car park on Kennedy Caddesi is open 24 hours and charges 140 TL for the first hour and 450 TL a day. In Cihangir, the covered car park at Cihangir Caddesi 19 has 350 spaces and charges 200 TL for the first hour, 550 TL a day and 9,800 TL a month; the covered car park in Maçka, next to Nişantaşı, charges the same. In Kadıköy, the Eski Salı Pazarı car park has 760 spaces at 140 TL for the first hour and 450 TL a day.
Street spaces run by İSPARK list fixed hours, such as 08:00 to 18:00 in Sultanahmet, and the tariff does not say what applies outside them. For a car that stays overnight, the car parks open 24 hours are the simpler choice.
Every bridge and tunnel between Europe and Asia charges a toll. In 2026 a car pays 59 TL on the 15 July Martyrs Bridge or the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, in both directions, and 330 TL in the Eurasia Tunnel between 05:00 and midnight. Payment is by HGS, the tag on the car, and no bridge or tunnel takes cash. From Kadıköy, a return drive to the old city pays two tolls, so the car is best left on the side where you sleep.
The city traffic index peaks on weekdays between about 17:00 and 18:00. Since February 2026 a traffic fine on a rented car can be issued to the renter.
Tax and registration rules for a guest
Turkey's accommodation tax is national, not a city tax. From 1 May to 31 December 2026 it is 1% of the room price before VAT, down from 2%, under a presidential decision. The property shows it as a separate line on the invoice. When a booking site sells a room without the tax, the property invoices the guest for it after the stay.
A flat let for up to 100 days needs a permit from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The permit number must appear in every listing, a Ministry plaque marked Turizm Amaçlı Konut hangs at the entrance, and every flat owner in the building must have agreed. The listing must also say whether parking comes with the flat.
Hotels and permitted flats record each guest's identity and report it to the police at once, and they may not house a guest who cannot show an identity document. Bring the passport to check-in.
When to book what
Book the district and the parking first, then the car. Sabiha Gökçen is the nearer airport for Kadıköy and Moda, about 32 km by road, and for Sultanahmet, about 41 km against 48 km, though the drive from it to the European side crosses the Bosphorus and pays a toll. Istanbul Airport is nearer for Karaköy, Taksim, Beşiktaş and Nişantaşı, at about 39 to 42 km. Plan airport runs and bridge crossings outside the weekday evening peak.
The 1% tax rate covers stays up to 31 December 2026; after that the 2% in the law applies again unless a new decision extends the cut.
