About Ibiza

Ibiza Town is about 9 km from the airport and Portinatx, in the far north, about 36 km by road. From June to September the island caps the number of vehicles on its roads, and tourist lodging pays a Balearic tax by the night.

ID at check-in
Real Decreto 933/2021: every guest over 14 signs a registration form with ID details, which the host sends to the police. Source
Vehicle limit
From 1 June to 30 September, enforced by plate reading with no sticker. Cars brought by ferry need an authorisation unless the return trip is booked with the same shipping line. Source
Formentera
From 1 June to 30 September rental vehicles hired outside Formentera may not be taken onto the island. Source
Ibiza Town parking
Dalt Vila and La Marina have plate-reading barriers since 18 May 2026. The blue zone costs EUR 2 for two hours at most; from June to September it runs Monday to Saturday, 09:00 to 14:00 and 17:00 to 22:00. Source
Monthly stays
Beyond 30 nights a let is no longer a tourist stay: a month or more is a seasonal lease under article 3.2 of the lease law, with a deposit of two months' rent. Source

Ibiza Town

The walled upper town of Dalt Vila, the harbour quarter of La Marina and the streets around Vara de Rey, with the Formentera ferries at the port. It suits first visits and guests who want restaurants and the evening on foot.

Car and parking

Dalt Vila and La Marina are restricted areas with plate-reading barriers since 18 May 2026. The blue zone costs EUR 2 for two hours at most, with longer hours from June to September, and the council's 2025 map lists 31 car parks with about 5,200 spaces.

Sant Antoni de Portmany

A bay town on the west coast with a harbour, a town beach and the sunset bars along the seafront. It suits nightlife, boat trips and beaches on the west coast, less so a quiet family week.

Car and parking

The 763 blue spaces cost EUR 1 an hour for two hours at most, Monday to Saturday from April to October. From 1 May to 15 October 2026 the road to Cala Salada is controlled from 09:30 to 17:00; park free at Can Coix and take the bus or a boat.

Santa Eulària des Riu

The town of the east coast, with a promenade, a town beach and the Wednesday hippy market at nearby Es Canar. It suits families and slower stays, including a month.

Car and parking

The town has 346 blue and 244 green spaces, with blue at EUR 1 an hour, and more than 1,600 free spaces in its edge-of-town car parks.

Portinatx and the north

The north around Sant Joan de Labritja, with small bays such as Portinatx, Cala Xarraca and Benirràs. It suits villa stays and quiet holidays with a car, less so anyone who wants nightlife.

Car and parking

Sant Joan publishes no paid parking zones. At Benirràs, press reports describe controlled access on Sunday afternoons once its three small car parks are full.

Sant Josep and the west coast

The coves of the south-west and west, from Cala Vedella and Cala Tarida to Cala Bassa and Platges de Comte. It suits villa holidays, beach days and sunsets.

Sant Josep publishes no paid parking zones, but the beach car parks at Platges de Comte and Cala Bassa can be full before 10:00 in July and August, according to local press.

Does a rental car need a permit in Ibiza in summer?

The driver needs nothing. From 1 June to 30 September 2026 Ibiza allows 17,668 vehicles a day, 14,000 of them rental cars counted under the rental companies' quota. A car brought by ferry needs an authorisation at EUR 1 a day, unless its return trip is booked with the same shipping line.

How much is the tourist tax in Ibiza?

The Balearic tourist stay tax: EUR 2 a person a night in holiday homes and one to three star hotels, up to EUR 4 in five star hotels. It drops by 75% from 1 November to 30 April and halves from the ninth night of a stay longer than eight nights. Under 16s are exempt.

Can an Ibiza rental car go to Formentera?

Not from 1 June to 30 September: Formentera's rules prohibit rental vehicles hired outside the island. Cross on foot and rent on Formentera.
