About Hobart

Hobart Airport is 17 km north-east of the city, and the city areas and Richmond lie about 19 to 21 km from it by road. The same car reaches the bases for the island's longer drives: Port Arthur, Bruny Island, Freycinet and, about 310 km away, Cradle Mountain.

Hobart city centre and waterfront

The centre on the River Derwent, below kunanyi / Mount Wellington, with Sullivans Cove and Salamanca Place, where sandstone former warehouses hold restaurants, galleries and shops and the Salamanca Market runs every Saturday. It suits a first visit on foot and the start and end of a road trip.

Car and parking

The council's multi-storey car parks are free for the first hour, then AUD 6 to 2 hours up to AUD 27 for 7 hours or more, plus AUD 8 for a night. Street parking is paid by bay number in the EasyPark app or at the meter, and its restrictions do not apply on public holidays.

Battery Point and Sandy Bay

Battery Point, immediately south of the CBD next to the Salamanca precinct, is known for its well-preserved colonial character and Arthur Circus. Sandy Bay beyond it runs along the Derwent with public beaches, the University of Tasmania and the Wrest Point casino hotel. It suits a stay in a residential street a walk from the centre.

Car and parking

Streets within walking distance of the city are residential parking zones with limits of usually one or two hours for non-residents; the council issues month-long temporary permits to residents and, if approved, nominated visitors. The Salamanca Square car park takes no cars after 8pm.

Richmond

A town about 25 km north-east of Hobart in the Coal River region, with the Richmond Bridge of 1823 to 1825, Australia's oldest bridge still in use, and preserved sandstone buildings, many of them Georgian. It suits a first or last night near the airport and a quieter base.

Port Arthur and the Tasman Peninsula

The former convict settlement on the Tasman Peninsula, about 97 km south-east of Hobart and part of the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage property, with Tasman National Park's sea cliffs and arches nearby. It suits an overnight stay to see the historic site and the park without a long drive back.

Car and parking

The parks service calls it a 90-minute drive on sealed roads from Hobart through Sorell. Tasman National Park needs a parks pass; Blowhole Road to Tasmans Arch and the Blowhole is unsealed with limited parking, and the Tasmans Arch and Devils Kitchen site is closed until 17 October 2026.

Bruny Island

A 362 km2 island south of Hobart across the D'Entrecasteaux Channel, reached by car ferry from Kettering, with South Bruny National Park and Adventure Bay. It suits a slower stay of a few nights once the car is across.

Car and parking

The ferry from Kettering takes no bookings and crosses in 15 minutes; allow extra time at Easter. Roads on the island are sealed and unsealed, the only fuel is at the Adventure Bay General Store, and there is no ATM.

Coles Bay and Freycinet

The east coast town at the northern end of Great Oyster Bay, with views of the granite peaks of The Hazards, and the main entrance to Freycinet National Park. It suits a two-night stop on an east coast drive.

Car and parking

Freycinet needs a parks pass. The visitor centre is 28 km from the Tasman Highway on a sealed road through Coles Bay, and the parks service asks drivers to avoid its reserves at night because of wildlife on the road.

Cradle Mountain

The mountain and locality in the Central Highlands, in Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, at 1,545 m. From Hobart it is a long drive to the north-west, so it suits an overnight stay rather than a day trip.

Visitors park at the visitor centre and take the shuttle: private cars may not enter the park during shuttle hours, and Dove Lake has nine spaces outside them. Campervans and trailers may not use Dove Lake Road at any time.
