Where to stay in Gaziantep

Gaziantep's old town spreads around the castle hill, with the Zeugma Mosaic Museum about 3.5 km north by road and the airport 20 km out. With a car, the question is where it waits while you walk the old town.

The castle stands on a hill in the city centre. The tourism ministry's two-day route starts below it, with Zincirli Bazaar, the Coppersmiths Bazaar and Almacı Bazaar, the National and Gümrük caravanserais and Tahmis Coffee, then climbs to the castle for the view over the city. The ministry describes the houses of Old Antep as leaning towards each other, keeping the streets in shade in the summer heat.

Bey Mahallesi, where the Kurtuluş Mosque stands, lies about 2 km by road from the castle, and the ministry suggests a walk through its streets.

About 1 km by road from the castle, the ministry's first day ends at the Mevlevi Lodge museum and the Pişirici and Kozluca kastels, large underground halls built where the old water channels pass under the mosques.

The Zeugma Mosaic Museum stands on the Şehitkamil side of the centre, about 3.5 km from the castle by road and near the railway station. The airport is 20 km from the city centre, with a HAVAŞ shuttle into town.

Staying with a rental car

Gaziulaş, the transport company of the Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality, publishes the tariff of one car park: the Kalealtı open car park. It opens from 07:00 to 21:00 every day and charges TRY 50 for the first hour, TRY 80 for 3 to 4 hours and TRY 120 for 4 to 24 hours. A 30-day subscription costs TRY 1,800. The listed hours end at 21:00, so ask before leaving a car there overnight; a hotel with its own parking matters more here than the fee.

Street spaces work through ParkON machines at the roadside. Enter the plate, choose the time, pay by contactless card and put the printed slip inside the windscreen where the inspectors can see it. Gaziulaş does not publish the street tariff on its page.

In May 2025 the municipality opened the yards of three schools around the castle, Abdullah Kepkep, Münifpaşa and Özdemirbey, as free car parks at weekends. That is a rule of May 2025; no 2026 confirmation was found.

For a flat, ask about parking before paying: the regulation on tourism rentals requires every listing to say whether parking comes with the home. GetCar's car rental page for Gaziantep compares local and international rental companies.

Official travel advice

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, in its Turkey advice updated on 21 September 2026: "FCDO advises against all travel to within 10km of the border with Syria due to fighting and a heightened risk of terrorism."

The US State Department advisory for Türkiye, issued on 9 June 2026, is "Level 2 - Exercise increased caution" for the country, with "Do not travel within 10 km (6 miles) of Türkiye's borders with Syria or Iraq for any reason, due to risk of terrorism and armed conflict." Its country information lists Gaziantep among the southeastern provinces where "U.S. Government employees are subject to travel restrictions".

Tax and registration rules for a guest

Turkey's accommodation tax is national, not a city tax. From 1 May to 31 December 2026 it is 1% of the room price before VAT, down from 2%, under a presidential decision. The property shows it as a separate line on the invoice, and when a booking site sold the room without it, the property invoices the guest after the stay.

A flat let for up to 100 days needs a permit from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The permit number must appear in every listing, a Ministry plaque marked Turizm Amaçlı Konut hangs at the entrance, and every flat owner in the building must have agreed. Hotels and permitted flats report each guest's identity to the police at once, so bring the passport to check-in.

When to book what

Book the parking with the room. With the one published municipal car park closing at 21:00, a hotel or flat that includes a space saves moving the car each evening. Confirm the permit number and the parking line before paying for a flat.

The 1% tax rate covers stays up to 31 December 2026; after that the 2% in the law applies again unless a new decision extends the cut.
