Where to stay in Christchurch

The Central City is the area inside the Four Avenues, rebuilt after the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, and it takes in Hagley Park and the Botanic Gardens beside the loop of the River Avon. Riccarton lies due west across Hagley Park, named after the estate whose homestead, Riccarton House, was finished in 1856; a Saturday market is held in front of it. Merivale, north of the centre, is a mostly residential suburb about 3 km from Cathedral Square.

Sumner is a seaside suburb about 13 km from Cathedral Square, at the end of the Metro route 3 bus from the airport. Lyttelton is a port town on Lyttelton Harbour, on the far side of the Port Hills, where cruise ships call. Akaroa, a small town on a sheltered harbour of Banks Peninsula, sits at the end of State Highway 75, about 80 km from the square by road.

In the Central City, the council's on-street meters charge NZD 5 an hour by number plate, paid at the meter by card, contactless or, at some, coins, or in the PayMyPark app. Each meter shows its own hours, days and time limit, and topping up stops at that limit; parking at the meters is free on public holidays. For a whole day, the council points drivers to its central-city parking buildings, whose 2026 rates it did not publish on the pages read.

Outside the centre, street parking rules in Riccarton, Merivale, Sumner, Lyttelton and Akaroa were not verified as of September 2026. The council does require unhosted holiday lets to give guests written instructions before arrival, parking arrangements included, so ask for them when booking.

GetCar reports that there are no toll roads on the South Island, that the Lyttelton road tunnel is about 2 km long and toll-free since 1979, that a 1.5 km stretch of the Summit Road above Lyttelton has been closed to cars since 2011, and that Akaroa is about 90 minutes away over the Hilltop. No local tourist tax was found for Christchurch as of September 2026. GST is 15%, and since 1 April 2024 platforms collect it on short-stay accommodation booked through them, along with cleaning fees charged on top.

The council's District Plan treats homes let to visitors by zone and by whether the host lives there. Hosts notify the council before they start. A hosted home in a residential zone takes up to 8 guests with no limit on nights; an unhosted one takes up to 8 guests for up to 60 nights a year, or 180 nights in the residential zones at Akaroa, Duvauchelle and Wainui and in the large lot zone. Individual bookings must be for less than 28 days, and in unhosted homes guests may not hold functions from 10pm to 7am with more extra people than paying guests. Near the airport, inside the 50 dB noise contour, an unhosted short-term let in a residential zone needs a resource consent. In most commercial zones there is no limit on guests or nights.

Visitors from the EU, the UK and the US need no visa but must hold an NZeTA before flying: NZD 17 in the official app or NZD 23 on the website, plus the NZD 100 International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy, paid once with it since 1 October 2024 rather than per night.

Request the NZeTA in good time: Immigration New Zealand asks travellers to allow 72 hours. The airport runs 24 hours a day, and Metro route 3 leaves Door 9 every 10 minutes on weekdays and every 15 at weekends for the city centre and Sumner.

For the bus, pay by contactless card: GetCar reports that Metrocard and cash stop being accepted in Christchurch on 23 November 2026. For Akaroa, plan a few nights rather than a day trip, since the town is about 85 km from the airport by road.
