A month in Bucharest
A month in a Bucharest apartment pays the RON 10 tourist tax on every night, because the 2026 decision has no long-stay exemption. Beyond the tax, a month brings Schengen day counting and a place to keep the car.

What a month means legally
UK and other visa-exempt visitors may stay 90 days in any 180 across the whole Schengen area, which Romania joined in full on 1 January 2025, after air and sea border checks ended on 31 March 2024. A month uses 30 of those days, and days spent in other Schengen countries in the 180 before arrival count too. The EU Entry/Exit System has registered non-EU visitors at the external border since it became fully operational on 10 April 2026.
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens need no visa. The General Inspectorate for Immigration, in guidance posted in 2021, asks them to register their residence only when they stay more than 3 months, so a month needs no paperwork with the inspectorate.
The tax on a month
The RON 10 per tourist per night applies to every night of a stay in any tourist accommodation in Bucharest, flats and rooms in family homes included. A month for two people adds RON 600 for 30 nights. The 2026 decision text lists no exemption and no cap on the number of nights, so the tax does not stop after a week or after 28 nights.
The tax must appear as its own line on the receipt. On a platform booking the platform collects it; on a direct booking the host does. Whether a month in a private flat under a residential lease counts as tourist accommodation for this tax was not verified as of October 2026; ask the landlord in writing before signing.
Classification and paperwork
A flat let to tourists in Romania belongs to a classified type of tourist accommodation, and Government Ordinance 58/1998 lets operators work only with classified accommodation. Since ministry order 948 of 2026, a private host files the application online with the consent of the neighbours who share walls with the flat, and may classify at most 7 rooms or 14 places. Asking a host for the classification certificate before paying a deposit is a fair check.
No rule was found that a platform listing must show the certificate number, and the host registration duties that a guest meets on arrival were not verified.
The areas and the parking that suit a month

The municipal parking subscription decides the plan for anyone with a car: RON 500 a month, valid every day from 08:00 to 20:00 on any municipal space, without a reserved place. The rate comes from a 2022 decision that the city parking company still lists in October 2026. Resident permits go only to people who live by the car park and drive a car registered in Bucharest, so a rental car does not qualify.
Herăstrău and Kiseleff suit a month with the lake and the Village Museum nearby and the airport about 12 km away. Centrul Civic sits about 3 km from the Old Town. The Old Town itself suits a month on foot, but car access to its streets was not verified, so ask the host about a space first.
What the platforms call a long stay
Airbnb calls 28 nights or more a monthly stay. It charges the first month up front, holds it until 24 hours after check-in, and charges each later month 10 days before it starts. How other platforms label long stays in Bucharest was not verified as of October 2026.
Pitfalls
Expecting the tourist tax to stop on a long stay. The 2026 decision charges every night.
Counting Schengen days only in Romania. The 90 days in 180 run across the whole area.
Counting on a resident parking permit. Visitors with a rental car pay the hourly or subscription rate.
Assuming the rental car has a vignette. Ask the desk before driving on national roads.
