Bari airport is about 12 km from the old town, and Polignano a Mare, Monopoli and the trulli of Alberobello lie within about 70 km of it. Treat Bari Vecchia as closed to a rental car: the Murat grid next to it, and the towns along the coast, work better with one.

Bari Vecchia

The old town on its peninsula between the old and new harbours, with the basilica of San Nicola, the cathedral and the castle. It suits a stay on foot without a car, with the Murat about 1 km away.

Car and parking

Treat it as closed to a rental car. The whole old town is a limited traffic zone with seven gates and permit-only streets, and since 1 July 2026, according to the local press, the Piazzale Mincuzzi car park inside has been reserved for residents. Leave the car in the Murat bays or at a park and ride.

The Murat quarter and the seafront

The grid of streets next to the old town, running down to the seafront promenade of the Lungomare Araldo di Crollalanza. It suits a city stay with a car and a month in Bari better than the old town does.

Car and parking

The regulated blue bays cost EUR 2 an hour in zone A and EUR 1 in zones B and C, Monday to Saturday 08:30 to 20:30. AMTAB's park and ride car parks, including Corso Vittorio Veneto and Pane e Pomodoro, charge EUR 1 a day with the shuttle bus included for the driver, or EUR 15 a month on working days.

Polignano a Mare

An old town on the cliffs above the Lama Monachile cove, on the coast about 36 km south-east of Bari. It suits a stay by the sea with Bari and Monopoli in reach.

Car and parking

The comune's parking guide of June 2026 lists paid street parking at San Francesco d'Assisi, closest to the centre, the paid seafront car park at Parco del Lauro and Piazzale Cristoforo Colombo, and free parking in Via Marconi behind the station. It advises arriving in the morning, avoiding 11:00 to 16:00, and allowing 10 to 15 minutes on foot to the sights.

Monopoli

An old town by the harbour, with the Capitolo beaches about 6 km south and Alberobello about 24 km inland. It suits a sea stay closer to the Itria valley than Bari.

Car and parking

In the Murat centre, bays cost EUR 1 an hour and are paid every day, until 01:30 from June to September; at Capitolo they cost EUR 3 a day from June to September. Hosts in the centre can buy the comune's accommodation parking subscription, EUR 60 a month, valid in every paid zone except Piazza Vittorio Emanuele.

Alberobello and the Itria valley

The trulli town, with Locorotondo about 9 km and Martina Franca about 15 km away, and a base for the small towns of the Itria valley. Brindisi airport, about 76 km away, is an alternative to Bari.

The two paid zones cost EUR 2 an hour every day, holidays included: zone A from 09:00 to 20:00, zone B from 09:00 to 22:00, and to midnight in July and August.

Where should a first visit to Bari be based?

The Murat, for walking into Bari Vecchia and parking in the regulated bays. Bari Vecchia itself suits a stay without a car. For the sea, Polignano a Mare and Monopoli are about 36 and 47 km down the coast from the Murat; for the trulli, Alberobello is about 68 km from the airport.

How much is the tourist tax in Bari?
