Where to stay in Auckland
Auckland spreads around its harbour, and the airport sits about 21 km by road south of the city centre. The areas differ in how a car fits: meters in the centre, residents' zones in the inner suburbs, car parks on the North Shore and a ferry to Waiheke.

How the areas differ
The city centre is one of the most densely built places in New Zealand, with the city's largest cluster of high-rise towers and some homes among the offices. On the waterfront, Viaduct Harbour turned a former commercial harbour into apartments, offices and restaurants.
Two inner suburbs sit close by. Ponsonby, about 2 km west, follows a ridge along Ponsonby Road, its main street. Parnell, about 2 km east of the centre by road, is often billed as the city's oldest suburb, with tree-lined streets, Edwardian town houses, 1920s bay villas and views of the port and the harbour from its hills.
Across the harbour, the North Shore has Devonport, a harbourside suburb at the southern end of its peninsula with a naval base and a name for heritage charm, and Takapuna, about 10 km from the centre by road, with Takapuna Beach and Lake Pupuke.
Waiheke Island, the second-largest island in the Hauraki Gulf, has 9,310 permanent residents and an estimated 3,400 people with second or holiday homes. Its Matiatia ferry terminal is 21.5 km by sea from the city terminal.
Staying with a rental car
In the city centre, Auckland Transport meters the streets by zone and plate. Zone 1 costs NZD 7 an hour for the first 2 hours on weekdays from 8am to 6pm and NZD 12 for each hour after, so 4 hours cost NZD 38; evenings and weekends cost NZD 4.50 then NZD 7. Stays under 10 minutes are free, and payment is at the machine or in the AT Park app. The Civic car park under Aotea Square charges NZD 6 an hour on weekdays up to NZD 25, and NZD 13 flat after 6pm.
Ponsonby, Parnell, Takapuna and other inner suburbs are residential parking zones. There, a resident's permit or one-day coupon lets a car park outside the signed time limits: the resident books the coupon for the visitor's number plate, and the car may then stand wherever the signs read Authorised Vehicles Exempt. Homes built after 30 September 2013 get no permits or coupons, so ask the host about off-street parking before booking.
On the North Shore, Auckland Transport runs car parks in Devonport at Clarence Street, Marine Square and Queens Parade, and in Takapuna at Toka Puia, Anzac Street and Killarney Street. For Waiheke, GetCar notes that cars cross on the SeaLink ferry from Half Moon Bay and that the rental terms decide whether a mainland rental may go; parking at Matiatia costs NZD 7 for up to 24 hours closest to the terminal. What the taxes and rules mean for a guest
No per-night visitor levy was found for Auckland as of September 2026. The council charged accommodation providers a targeted rate before and decided not to reinstate it for 2025/2026; properties let through sites such as Airbnb or Bookabach for more than 28 nights a year can still pay business rates on part or all of their value. Both are rates on the owner, not lines on the guest's bill.
GST is 15%. Since 1 April 2024 platforms collect it on short-stay accommodation booked through them, along with cleaning fees charged on top.
Visitors from the EU, the UK and the US need no visa but must hold an NZeTA before flying: NZD 17 in the official app or NZD 23 on the website, plus the NZD 100 International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy, paid once with it since 1 October 2024 rather than per night. A holiday let is outside the Residential Tenancies Act, and so are hotels and motels.
When to book what
Request the NZeTA in good time: Immigration New Zealand asks travellers to allow 72 hours.
For early and late flights, the AirportLink bus runs every 10 minutes from 4:30am to 12:40am between the terminals and Puhinui station, where trains continue to the centre.
In the city centre, the Greys Avenue car park is closed to the public until about December 2026. For Waiheke with a car, settle the rental terms before booking the car ferry.
