Where to stay in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi spreads over an island city, the islands around it and the mainland towards the airport, so where to stay decides the drive: Yas Island is about 17 km from Zayed International by road, the Corniche about 43 km.

Downtown and the Corniche are the centre of Abu Dhabi island: Qasr Al Hosn, the oldest stone building in the city, and the Corniche, an 8 km waterfront with cycle and walking paths, cafés and a public beach. Al Reem Island, 600 m offshore, is a district of residential towers, and Al Maryah beside it is the central business district, with The Galleria mall and two five-star hotels; Al Reem is about 8 km from Qasr Al Hosn by road.

Saadiyat Island, 500 m off the island, is still being built as a residential and leisure district around the Saadiyat Cultural District and the Louvre Abu Dhabi, about 16 km from the centre. Yas Island, reclaimed land by the airport, holds the Yas Marina Circuit and Ferrari World. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque stands on the mainland side of the Maqta channel, between the island and the airport. Al Ain, the largest inland city in the Emirates, is about 162 km from the centre by road, on the Omani border.

Staying with a rental car

Street parking is Mawaqif, run by Abu Dhabi Mobility. Standard bays, marked black and turquoise, cost AED 2 an hour or AED 15 for the whole day; premium bays, white and turquoise, cost AED 3 an hour for at most four hours. Both are charged from 8:00 to midnight and are free on Sundays and public holidays. Bays marked for residents belong to permit holders from 21:00 to 8:00, so a car left there overnight is in the wrong place.

Payment is by cash, at the Mawaqif machines, with a rechargeable card, by direct mobile payment or in the Darb app. Multi-storey Mawaqif car parks charge AED 2 an hour or AED 15 a day around the clock. A towed car goes to the impound area in Karama: AED 500 for the tow and AED 100 a day for the first month, and release needs the owner's documents, which for a rental means the rental company (via GetCar).

The Darb toll gates onto Abu Dhabi island charge AED 4 a passage from 7:00 to 9:00 and 15:00 to 19:00, Monday to Saturday, with no daily cap, and the rental company pays and bills the driver (via GetCar). GetCar's guide Driving in Abu Dhabi covers the airport desks, Darb, the speed limits and radars, Mawaqif and fuel. Ask about parking before booking on Reem, Maryah or Saadiyat, where the Mawaqif pages name no zones.

What the fees and licences mean for a guest

Since 1 September 2023 a hotel bill in Abu Dhabi carries a tourism fee of 4% and a municipality fee of 4% of the invoice, under DCT Abu Dhabi's Circular No. 9/2023, which also cancelled the old municipality fee of AED 15 per room per night. VAT is 5% on hotel apartments and serviced units. No official rule on a service charge was found, so check what a total includes.

A holiday home charges a tourism fee of 6% of the total invoice, which DCT requires to be itemised on the invoice and shown on price lists. Since 1 January 2026 a holiday home may be listed online only with a DCT licence, the licence number must be visible on the listing, and shared units may not be listed at all. Guests receive the terms in Arabic and English before confirming, with taxes and fees shown apart from the rate, and the house rules forbid parties.

Hotels register guests through DCT's Smart Check-In programme, mandatory for every licensed hotel since Circular No. 6/2026, which verifies identity in line with Abu Dhabi Police guest registration requirements. Keep the passport at hand on arrival.

When to book what

Check entry first. British citizens get a free visa on arrival and EU citizens a visa waiver, each for 90 days in any 180; the EU agreement does not cover Ireland. US citizens get a no-fee visa on arrival for 30 days. UK travel advice, updated in July 2026, warns of possible flight cancellations and airspace closures across the Middle East, so read it before paying for a stay that cannot be cancelled.

Book a holiday home only when the listing shows its DCT licence number, and ask a hotel or host on Reem, Maryah or Saadiyat about parking before paying. The Grand Mosque is free to visit, but visitors must book a visit and get an online access pass first (via GetCar).
